Produced in 2010, Challenges, Assets, and Innovations, is a comprehensive examination of the challenges facing rural education and the ways communities are working to address these issues. A must read for those working on education in rural areas.


Digest of Education Statistics
Produced by the National Center for Education Statistics, the Digest is a compilation of data related to education in America from pre-K to graduate school. Published annually since 1995, observations for some variables go back decades.

Education Department Data Express
Developed by the Department of Education, Data Express is another report-building interface with a variety of key education variables. Data is generally limited to the last decade.

Education Counts Research Center
The Education Counts Research Center, includes a wide variety of variables and the ability to overlay data on maps and generate graphic representations internally to the website. The Research Center is made available by Education Week which is a magazine focused on education and teaching in America and globally.

Elementary/Secondary Information System (ELSi)
The ELSi is a National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) web application that allows users to quickly view public and private school data and create custom tables and charts using data from the Common Core of Data (CCD) and Private School Survey (PSS). The CCD is the Department of Education’s database of information related to public primary and secondary school education in the United States, with information going back to the 1990-91 school year. The PSS is the private school equivalent.

NAEP Data Explorer
The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test has been performed nationwide on students throughout the country since 1990. It measures students’ proficiency in in eleven subjects at grades 4, 8, and 12. The Data Explorer provides aggregate data of the results of these tests for the last two decades.

National Center for Higher Education Management Systems Information Center
The Information Center supplies state specific data on variables related to higher education. It included state profiles, the ability to create custom reports, and an interactive map generator.

US Census 2010 Statistical Abstract
The US Census’s publication of data summaries related to social, political, and economic organization of the United States. It includes information gathered by all levels of the US government, private associations, and international organizations. The Statistical Abstract has a section dedicated entirely to education. 


Foundation for Excellence in Education: State Initiatives
A Florida based non-profit, Foundation for Excellence in Education, is focused on state-by-state educational reform. Their website provides a summary of recently passed education related legislation for all 50 states. Along with the original bills and a summary, they provide their own an assessment of the impact of the legislation on education in that state.
